Billy Ball is the award winning Managing Editor of Cardinal & Pine in North Carolina. He’s covered local, state and national politics, government, education, criminal justice, the environment and immigration in North Carolina for almost two decades. In this WCPT 820AM podcast, we talked about attacks on public education and school voucher efforts including:
How North Carolina republicans are trying to change the voucher law to eliminate income limits- meaning regular folks have to pay for rich kids to go to private schools
The Supreme Court says that religious freedom means you do not have to work on the sabbath, but in NC and in others, taxpayers are forced to pay for kids to go to religious schools- even if the religion is not their own.
How these private schools, the ones taxpayers are supporting through vouchers, do not have to take every student who is eligible, like public schools. They can discriminate based on religion or can refuse to take kids with learning differences.
The impact the of the new GOP majority North Carolina State Supreme Court inlcuding how the court has ended hopes that underfunded schools in black and brown communities will ever get close their peers.
