As the Russia crisis unfolds, gratitude for the President we have
And can't even contemplate what a disaster the other guys would be
As the world holds its breath and watches events unfold in Russia, we should all be grateful that Joe Biden, not Donald Trump is in the White House.
Biden’s foreign policy has had some bumps, but it is thoughtful, steady, and realistic. Some examples include: the de-risking our ties to China, pushing back on Russian aggression, ending our generations-long wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan, strengthening NATO and the alliance of democracies, developing a foreign policy for the middle class, and making real strides to fight climate change. It’s a big, complicated world, and there is plenty more to do, particularly with regard to Latin America and Africa, but the point holds.
As the crisis unfolds in Russia, the administration is quietly consulting allies, assessing risks, and avoiding incendiary escalations. Our response is serious.
Donald Trump gets credit for the Abraham accords. But his record on Europe, Russia, and NATO was a disaster. His attempted shakedown of Volodymyr Zelenskyy led to his first impeachment. Then there’s his bizarre relationship with Mr. Putin.
But the biggest reasons Donald Trump would be a disaster in this crisis are his impulsive egotism, his jealousy of any story where he is not center stage, his puerile social media habits. Does anyone doubt that Mr. Trump would right now be pushing himself to the center of the story and be tweeting the most unhelpful and dangerous nonsense?
Thank goodness this crisis is unfolding on the watch of a serious President who, by the way, actually does have the best people.
