In Washington, and in our states, the GOP is weakening America. Here are a few recent examples, starting in D.C.
The GOP has effectively voided Article I of the Constitution by vacating the Speaker’s position and refusing to fill it. The Biden administration still get things done for a time, but our system of government depends on a functioning legislature. We cannot long provide aid to our allies, or secure our borders, or do any of the things Americans need here at home, if this continues. The GOP majority has delivered only chaos and lies, and, of course, that’s a comfort only to our adversaries.
Not content with destroying the legislative branch, the GOP is eroding the Executive Branch’s ability to conduct foreign policy and secure the national defense. They have blocked confirmation of hundreds of senior military and diplomatic leaders.
Instead, undermining our country, Congress could pass the aid bill submitted by President Biden. They could address things like cyber security. And, of course, they could stop interfering with the Justice Department and state level prosecution of domestic insurrectionists. Unfortunately, there is no sign the GOP will find its patriotic roots any time soon.
It doesn’t have to be this way. When Democrats controlled the Congress, they passed major legislation to reduce inflation, rebuild America’s manufacturing base, upgrade our national infrastructure, end the pandemic and rebuild the economy, and, of course, fund our national defense and foreign policy.
Meanwhile in GOP controlled states, American social and economic progress is also being undermined. Here are just a couple of examples:
In more than a dozen states, abortion restrictions have endangered the health and safety of women and forced many to flee to other states for care.
In Florida, homeowners are paying the highest property insurance premiums in the nation. At more than $6,000 a year, that’s triple what it cost when Gov DeSantis took office.
In Ohio, and elsewhere, public schools are being de-funded to pay the private and religious school tuition for children of wealthy families.
In Iowa and elsewhere, while claiming to be against immigration, GOP leaders have eased restrictions on child labor to profit off migrant children.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Blue states are protecting voting rights, reproductive rights, worker rights, LGBTQ rights. Wages are going up, measures of working conditions, median pay, public safety, all improving.
Pretty easy choice when you think about it.
